Maybe a Giant Water Scavenger Beetle - is there a pond or small stream nearby - my insect ID book says that they sometimes overwinter by creeping under litter on land ....
It was pretty big and moving fast, so just for fun, I flipped it on it's back, you should have seen it, like doing a mad backstroke with those 2 big legs to get flipped back over and he did it
he was moving really fast and got pretty mad when I fooled with him, but I used a paper not my hand, those legs looked like they had daggers on them, ya know like Japanese Beetles can stick to your hand? Did you ever do that when you were a kid? Gosh I remember I had a whole handful of them and all of the sudden, OUCH!!!!!! they were pricking my palm and they don't let go!
