I have never ever seen it as crowded as today. At one point we were trying to make our way to Rockefeller to see the tree and we were at a standstill in pedestrian traffic for 30 minutes. I thought people were going to start a riot.

C'mon, give! What did you see? besides human traffic.
No shows, just shopping and eating! We took a bus from Suffield CT Parks and rec dept for $36 each, there were four of us ladies, lots of walking!! One girl had never been there so we tried realy hard to get to most of all the popular places, FAO Schwarz, Trump plaza, Tiffanies, Rockefeller, Times Square, Macy's etc etc.
Sounds like a lot of fun and you covered a lot of ground. That's not a bad price for a ride to and from the city.
NYC is a fascinating place to explore ~~ that's for sure. But I can't handle the crowds. Especially the crowds during this peak tourist month.
I was in Times Square for the annual New Years Eve Midnight Madness back in my 20's ~~ never again!!
But I do hope you enjoyed it. I bet the "newbie" got an eyefull!!
