Corey and Tyler having a bit of fun riding on the ice at the pond that I grew up living near, we ice skated here all winter and swam in it all summer, great memories flooded my head when I walked over there to take pictures
well, it's been really really cold for quite a while now, by mid January the ponds around here are usually frozen enough. My dad used to drill a hole in the ice to see how thick it is, I believe 4 inches if I recall was enough. I always get scared being on ice, especially when it expands and makes that horrible noise.
Your Dad was very wise by testing the ice that way! I seen in the TV documentary Ice Truckers where the frozen rivers/lakes become the highways for heavy trucks to transport winter supplies up in Alaska ~~ amazing strength in thick ice!! Riding the motorcycles on the ice is great practice for controlling the bikes in slides and skids in their dirt track races....

How do they know when the ice is safe enough to ride on?

I know what you mean.
But looks like a lot of fun.
