Cleanup....

Harley came out to watch, he was a little jittery, there is still ice on the tree's and when it falls, watch out, you can get hit in the head and yes it hurts, both Ray and I got hit, hard hats are required...

This side of the yard is going to take forever, but I think Ray may have hired some help to come today

My favorite tree was not able to be saved and as you can see it was rotten in the middle, I think it was about 25 years old and kind of in a wet part of the yard

He helped for about a total of 5 minutes, whats wrong with Teenagers today?

More of the poor maple

Bye Bye Maple

All the neighbors have dragged sticks to the street, we think the town may come by with chippers

Oh Kristen - it's one thing to see all the mess on the ground, but then to look up to see all the damage to the crowns of the trees. It's heart-breaking! I'm sorry that your favorite tree seemed too far gone to save. How many trees did you lose all together?

Wow, that's unbelieveable! I recall seeing something on TV about the East Coast being without power. I didn't realize this was it.

Does CT get ice storms throughout the Winter? (We're having rain today, and everyone is acting like it's a major event..)

Hi Biddie and Denise, it is a HUGE mess, just those 3 hours we spent yesterday wore us out, it would take us months to clean that up alone and a chipper is needed so he is going to pay a tree company to come in and clean it up. We only lost that Maple and the Dogwood (yes my other favorite) the rest of the tree's just lost a lot of limbs but it amounted to a lot of debris on the ground.
We do get our fair share of Ice storms, last year we had a doozie too but this one was just plain old nasty!
The town I live in, is so close to Mass and the Berkshires that we almost live in a whole other world, 5 miles down the road, it was raining and they got no ice

I was wondering about that, I have noticed all the piles of branches along everyone's property lines. I wonder if I could get the guys to drop off some of the wood chips in my yard?

Dave just told me the state guys will be chipping, not the town guys. I guess there's not enough money in the town budget for this. Dang! I was hoping to get some chips for the garden.

Can you put fresh chips down on a garden? I thought they had to be aged first.

I think they'd weather enough overwinter that they'd be ok. It wouldn't be a heavy mix of pine, which could be detrimental. The pine trees seemed to have withstood the ice better than the hardwoods.

They would be atop of several inches of older wood chips in varying degrees of breaking down, so I think they would go into the mix equanimously.

These are all trees that have added to the soil around here for ages, so I think it would be ok.
