Fall Colors and new tree's

This is the smaller of the two tree's
There are about 4-5 of these

This is the bigger of the two new tree's (Chestnuts?)

This is the entire tree, I should get a tie down to straighten it because a couple of winters ago, 1/2 of it broke off in an ice storm so it leans to the heavy branch side (this side)

Maureen was right about the Kousa Dogwood and you can eat the berries but they don't taste good except to wildlife, when I went out to take the picture a squirrel was on there eating but I scared him off

3rd and 4th pictures down...If they are small I'd say they are Jimson weed (toxic). But if taller then somethng else.

That spiney thing is not a chestnut. A chestnut fruit (nut) is perfectly round and there are like a kabillion more spines on them. The leaves are also long pointed ovals with "toothed" edges. The plant you show is looking more herbacious (sp) meaning more "fleshy" than a woody tree. If you want to check out a chestnut stop by on your way home tomorrow I'll show you mine.

So I can check out your nuts Maureen but what is mine??

I think it might be the weed Priscilla mentioned.

Na uh that weed grows in the desert

Then I have no clue. But just looking at it again, the leaf structure makes it look mean, like it doesn't belong.

Priscilla is right I am going home to rip those things right of my garden before those pods open up, do you know drug users use Jimson Weed to get high? How the heck did this junk end up in my garden? I bet the mulch

Yes, it probably came from the mulch. It grows around here in waste places and can get pretty big if the soil is good and it gets lots of water. I saw a group of huge Jimson weeds beside a parking lot here at the college a couple of years ago and I was just about to go and remove them when they began construction there for the police academy. So the plants are gone and I hope nobody got a bad reaction. Dona't even touch the stems, or use gloves.

Oohh....What is the spiney thing?

Kristen said...

It turns out to be a very bad weed Madeleine, not a Chestnut tree as I had hoped :(

What?! That's not cool OR good....That would be sooo cool if it would have turned out to be a Chestnut!!!
Oh sorry, I had no idea there was a comment conversation going on about it!!!

I'm so glad that Priscilla and Maureen are so alert - I've heard of Jimson weed but didn't know what it looked like. It seems familiar to me - I think that I've seen it here. I'm going to be alert to it now, pull it up and carefully stay out of the smoke as I burn it up on the burn pile .....
