Every once in a while I get these birds at the feeders, I don't mind one or two, but sometimes there are TONS of them, this one came by himself today, he was eating my new woodpecker suet feeder I just put there the other day. I have not seen any woodpeckers this year, which is my fault I hadn't been feeding them!

Oops. Where there's one starling there's usually a flock.
I've seen great crowds of crows lately, but just on some properties and not others, perhaps where there are insect eggs on the bark (i.e., not sprayed). I ndon't see how they all survive in the winter. Maybe they eat the small birds--fewer juncos lately.
I have been feeding the birds for a while now, my squirrel feeder was wrecked this year to the point I need a new pole (thanks to bears) so I have a cheaper shepards hook, I still get lots of junco's, nut hatches, chickadee's, cardinals, finches, not those cowbirds any more thank goodness, the crows are always in my neighborhood too, they like the grassy part of our lawn, worms maybe?

That's better; for a minute I thought you FED the little varmints. I guess you have more species because of all those woods where they can live in the summer.
Even if they aren't a desirable species, those starlings do have an interesting feather pattern.
You know what, I hadn't thought of it until you mentioned it but I haven't seen as many cowbirds in the last few years either.
I remember being annoyed by how many would come to yard in the past...I wonder where they are?
Maybe the surge in the Starling population impacted the cowbirds somehow?
I have not seen any cowbirds this year and I dont' think last year either, here at work or at home. Hmmmm , good question! I think starlings do have the prettiest plumage, is that what you call it??
